Supreme court has directed government to provide voting privilege to public servants, security personnels and prisoners.
A single bench of Justice Bishwambhar Shrestha gave interim order to provide voting rights to public servants, security personnels and prisoners in the upcoming House of Representative and National Assembly elections under proportionatal system. Hearing on a writ filed by Nishant Pokharel, Justice Shrestha directed government to arrange for a temporary voter’s roll and provide voting rights according to section 30(1) and (2) of Electoral Roll Act, 2073.
Section 30(1) and (2) mentions about the creation of temporary election rolls for employees serving in government offices, local bodies or organizations owned or controlled by Government of Nepal, Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnels in barracks, prisoners and detainees in jails, employees and security personnel deputed in election or polling centers, people living in registered old age homes and other people prescribed by election commission.
